The short answer

"White Maeng Da" is a market name: White is the vein-colour category and Maeng Da is the name it's sold under, not a verified origin. In the only study comparing strain-labelled products in a lab, six products from one vendor — including red, green and white Maeng Da and Bali — showed no significant difference in mitragynine (1.4–1.56%) or total alkaloids (Huisman 2023). In the same study's survey, white products were rated 69.42 for "better able to concentrate" and 66.5 for "feeling more energetic" on a 0–100 scale — self-reported effects, not measured ones.

21+ only. Kratom is not approved by the FDA for any medical use, and nothing here is medical advice. Effects described here are reported by survey respondents, not claims by us.

What the science says

  • Six strain-labelled products (three batches each) did not differ in mitragynine, other major alkaloids or total alkaloids.
  • Mean mitragynine per product (Table 6): White Maeng Da 1.54%, Red Maeng Da 1.52%, Green Bali 1.44%, White Thai 1.41%, Green Maeng Da 1.56%, Red Bali 1.4% (F = 1.21, p = 0.362).
  • Despite visibly different vein colours, mature-leaf alkaloid profiles were largely the same across accessions.
  • Geography affected mitragynine but not vein colour.
  • The exception: The difference is small: in northern samples, green-veined UAE extract had 58.07 µg/mg vs 57.20–57.57 µg/mg for red-veined; region mattered more (southern samples 46.14–47.39 µg/mg).

Kratom leaf in general: Across 611 samples from three seasonal collections, mitragynine ranged 0.35–3.46%, 0.31–2.54% and 0.48–2.81%. (Sengnon 2023) The authors cite prior literature putting mitragynine at 1–6% and 7-OH at 0.01–0.04% of leaf content in commercial products. (Todd 2020) Mitragynine reached up to 1.19% of leaf dry mass in mature leaves; juvenile leaves were dominated by speciociliatine (up to 1.14%). (Ransden 2026)

Measured: lab analyses and field studies. No study has found a reliable chemical difference between strain names.

Safety

  • NIDA describes kratom as producing opioid- and stimulant-like effects.
  • Kratom is not lawfully marketed in the US as a drug, dietary supplement or food additive.
  • Poison-centre kratom reports rose about 1,200%, from 258 in 2015 to 3,434 in 2025; 14,449 reports over 11 years.

Is it legal?

A strain name doesn't change the law. Kratom is banned in some states and regulated in others, and the federal government has proposed scheduling concentrated 7-OH — check your state.

Common questions

What does "White Maeng Da" mean?

It combines a vein-colour category (White) with a market name (Maeng Da). Vendors use these names to sort products; the name refers to a style of product, not a verified place it was grown.

Is White Maeng Da kratom chemically different from other strains?

The only peer-reviewed lab comparison of strain-labelled products found no significant difference in mitragynine or total alkaloids across six products (Huisman 2023), and a 2026 field study found no correlation between vein colour and alkaloid profile (Ransden 2026). One 2026 study found slightly more mitragynine in green-veined leaves, a difference smaller than the one between regions (Krongrawa 2026).

What do users report about white kratom?

In a survey of 644 kratom users, white products were rated 69.42 for "better able to concentrate", 66.5 for "feeling more energetic", 62.61 for "feeling more stimulated", 41.74 for "feeling more constipated than usual", 41.14 for "able to stay up all night" on a 0–100 scale (Huisman 2023). These are self-reported ratings, and the authors note they may reflect marketing, since the products' alkaloid content didn't differ.

Is White Maeng Da kratom legal?

Strain names don't change the law: kratom's legal status depends on your state. It is banned in some states and regulated in others — see kratom laws by state.
